“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever”

Jacques-Yves Cousteau, was a French naval officer, explorer, conservationist, filmmaker, innovator, scientist, photographer, author and researcher. Born in 1910, he studied the sea and all forms of life in water. Cousteau co-developed the aqualung, pioneered marine conservation and was a member of the Academie Francaise - which consists of forty members, known informally as les immortels (the immortals).

This wonderful man described his underwater world research in a series of books, perhaps the most successful being his first book - The Silent World: A Story of Undersea Discovery and Adventure, which was published in 1953. He has also directed many films, most notably the documentary adaptation of the book "The Silent World" which won the Palme D’Or at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. Jaques remained the only person to win this accolade for a documentary film, until Michael Moore, who won the award in 2004, nearly 50 years later with Fahrenheit 9/11.

He is prolifically quoted - one of his most famous quotes being “People Protect What They Love”

No aquarium, no tank in a marine land, however spacious it may be, can begin to duplicate the conditions of the sea. And no dolphin who inhabits one of those aquariums or one of those marine lands can be considered normal.
