READY TO RIDE LEVEL ONE CERTIFICATE
This two hour course will teach you everything you need to know about stand up paddle. It is aimed at people who have never stand up paddled before or people who have had a go but want to learn the basics.
Learning to paddle board (also known as paddle surf) is a fast and fun process with a qualified BSUPA (British Stand Up Paddle Association) instructor. The course structure is designed to give you the information you need to get on the water safely, have fun and learn the technique of paddle surfing.
During the course you will be given an introduction to how the weather and environment affects you, how to carry the board and paddle, paddling technique, different types of turns, self rescue, how to fall safely as well as how to plan expeditions and the basics of stance in surf.
This 2 hour course is run in flat water and once completed, you will be presented with your Level 1 “Ready to Ride” Certificate, as well as a €50.00 euro voucher to redeem against the purchase of a Fatstick inflatable paddle board or a Fatstick rigid paddle board.
And it gets even better than that! For every paddle board purchased the awesome team at Fatstick Boards, will plant a tree in the Fatstick Forest. Read more about their sustainability project here.
What will you learn?
Weather and Environment - The first part of your lesson will be about the weather. It will include what to look out for when planning your time on the water, using weather apps, weather forecasts and what to look for when you are on the water, in terms of quickly changing weather conditions.
Know your kit - We will go through the equipment you will need, why you need it, how to look after it and best practices.
SUP Skills - A short land based lesson will demonstrate the different positions and manoeuvres that you would typically need to know when paddle boarding. You will learn how to carry your board correctly, so that you don't hurt yourself or others. Finally you will get a chance to practice everything you have learnt on land - as we head out to sea. The four main techniques you will learn are:
- The prone position (also known as the rescue position)
- Kneeling, paddling and turning
- Standing, paddling and turning
- How to fall safely
Frequently asked questions:
How long will the lessons last?
Your lesson will last for approximately two hours with the majority of your time on the water (depending on your strength and fitness).

You will need to wear the correct clothing for the duration of your session. We recommend that you wear a swimsuit or bikini and/or a rash vest or gym t-shirt, board shorts or gym shorts and a sun hat or baseball cap to keep the sun off your head, face and eyes. A wet suit may be required depending on the weather conditions.

We offer the “Ready To Ride” course on a one to one basis or a maximum of two people.
