Let’s face it, we talk about wind all the time!

Before your paddle board session, during your paddle board session, after your paddle board session… sometimes it feels like we should just put it on the payroll.

But the truth is, wind is one of the biggest things we think about at Mallorca SUPCO. Not because we want to spoil anyone’s fun, but because we make a point of keeping you guys safe, comfortable and confident on the water.

And here in Mallorca, wind is not just “wind”.

Every wind has a name.

Not just a direction. Not just a speed. A name. A mood. A character. A personality. Some are gentle and helpful. Some are lively and unpredictable. Some arrive with clear skies and fresh air, while others bring swell, chop, haze or that heavy, sticky feeling that makes the sea look a little less inviting than it did at breakfast.

So, this is Mallorca SUPCO’s really useful guide to wind: what it is, where it comes from, why it matters, and how it affects us as a paddle boarding business.

So, what actually is wind?

In the simplest possible terms, wind is moving air.

That’s it.

But like most simple things, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes.

Wind starts because the sun heats the Earth unevenly. Land, sea, mountains, valleys, clouds and coastlines all warm up and cool down at different speeds. When one area becomes warmer, the air above it rises. Cooler air then moves in to replace it.

That movement of air is wind.

In Mallorca, this matters because we are surrounded by sea, shaped by mountains, and blessed with long sunny days. The island creates its own little wind stories, especially around the coast. The sea and land are constantly heating, cooling and swapping air between them.

That is why a calm morning can turn into a breezy afternoon.

It is also why we can look at the same bay at 9am and 2pm and see two completely different personalities.

Why wind matters so much for paddle boarding

On a paddle board, you are standing on the water with a paddle in your hand and a big inflatable board underneath you.

Which is wonderful.

But it also means you are very connected to the conditions around you.

Wind affects:

  • how easy it is to paddle
  • how quickly you drift
  • how choppy the sea becomes
  • how tired you get
  • how confident you feel
  • how safe it is to go out

A gentle breeze can feel gorgeous. It cools you down, ripples the water and makes the whole experience feel fresh and alive.

A stronger wind is different.

It can push you away from shore, turn flat water into chop, make steering harder and turn a relaxing paddle into a bit of a workout. And nobody wants to accidentally end up halfway to Menorca because they underestimated a “light breeze”.

That’s why we always check the wind before sessions. Not just the forecast, but the direction, the strength, the timing and what it is likely to do next.

Because when you understand the wind, you understand the water.

In Mallorca, every wind has a name

This is one of the beautiful things about island life.

In Mallorca, the winds are traditionally known by their names and directions. They are part of the rhythm of the island. Sailors, fishermen, locals and sea lovers have used these names for generations.

There are the compass winds:

Tramuntana — north
Gregal — northeast
Llevant — east
Xaloc — southeast
Migjorn — south
Llebeig — southwest
Ponent — west
Mestral — northwest

And then there is one very important local wind for us:

Embat — the sea breeze.

For paddle boarding, Embat is the one we talk about a lot.

It is the local thermal breeze that often builds during warm days. In the morning, the sea can be glassy, calm and dreamy. Then, as the land heats up, air rises over the island and cooler air moves in from the sea. That sea-to-land movement is Embat.

Beautiful? Yes.

Useful? Often.

Worth respecting? Absolutely.

The morning magic

This is why we love mornings.

Morning water in Mallorca can be something really special. Softer light, quieter beaches, cooler air and, often, calmer sea. Before the heat of the day builds and before the sea breeze starts to wake up, the water can be at its most peaceful.

That’s when paddle boarding feels effortless.

You glide.

You chat.

You look down and see the seabed beneath you.

You forget your phone exists for a while, which is honestly half the point.

This is also why we may recommend morning sessions, especially for beginners, families or anyone who wants that calm, confidence-building experience.

More mornings outside. Less time inside. That’s the idea.

When wind changes the plan

Sometimes people ask why we move a session, change a route or suggest a different time.

The answer is usually simple: wind.

Not because we are being dramatic. Not because we don’t want to go out. We always want to go out.

But we want to go out when it is safe and enjoyable.

A paddle board session should feel adventurous, not stressful. If the wind is too strong, too gusty, or blowing in a direction that could push people away from shore, we take that seriously.

We would always rather make a careful call than send people out in conditions that are not right.

The sea will always be there tomorrow.

Your safety comes first today.

Wind direction matters as much as wind speed

A lot of people only look at wind speed.

But direction is just as important.

A light breeze blowing towards the shore can be perfectly manageable. A stronger breeze blowing away from shore can be a completely different story. Offshore wind can make the water near the beach look deceptively calm, while slowly pushing you further out.

That is why we don’t just ask, “Is it windy?”

We ask:

  • Where is it coming from?
  • Where is it pushing us?
  • Will it build later?
  • Will it create chop?
  • Is there shelter?
  • Is there a safe return?

This is the kind of thinking that happens before you even arrive at the beach.

Wind gives the sea its mood

The sea is never just one thing.

Some days she is flat, silky and still.

Some days she sparkles.

Some days she rolls.

Some days she has a little attitude.

Wind is one of the biggest reasons why.

It can polish the surface or rough it up. It can bring fresh clarity or hazy heat. It can create little ripples, rolling swell or messy chop. It can make a bay feel calm and protected, or suddenly make it feel much bigger than it looked from the shore.

For us, reading wind is part science, part experience, and part respect.

We check forecasts, but we also look at the water. We watch the flags, the trees, the surface texture, the direction of the ripples, the feel of the air.

Mallorca tells you a lot if you know how to listen.
